Luisana Rivas, mezzo-soprano
Luisana Rivas is a Venezuelan mezzo soprano noted for her advocacy in promoting the music of Latin America. This summer, she will be performing the title role in L’enfant et les sortilèges as well as covering the role of Annina from La Traviata in Spotlight on Opera’s 15th anniversary season. Earlier this year, she collaborated with The Ponce Project of Houston to create “Canciones de Amor,” a recital of carefully curated songs of love and loss from Central and South America. In September of 2020, she was a featured performer in I Colori Dell’opera’s Latinx History Month concert series, presenting pieces from Argentina and her native country. She has also performed the roles of Turnspit in Rusalka and Hänsel in Hänsel und Gretel with the LAH-SOW 2020 Austin and Bloomington workshops. During her time at Austin Peay State University, Luisana performed the title role in Dido and Aeneas, was seen as Ruth in The Pirates of Penzance, and Mrs. Skosvodmonit in Menotti's The Boy Who Grew Too Fast. In 2018, she was a young artist at the Miami Classical Music Festival singing the role of Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos. Luisana has been featured as a soloist with the Gateway Chamber Orchestra in Clarksville, Tennessee, and has done extensive recital work with Asociación Grupo Lírico de Panamá and Opera Panama. When not singing, Luisana is a teaching artist with HGOco and enjoys doing work that uplifts communities through the arts.
